What is Diabetes mellitus ?

Friday 8 February 2008 @ 12:18 am

Diabetes mellitus is type 1 diabetes. This is also known as Type 1 diabetes, Type I diabetes, T1D, IDDM. Formerly known as “childhood”, “juvenile” or “insulin-dependent” diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is a condition of autoimmunity; where one’s own immune system “attacks” structures in one’s own body either destroying the tissue or decreasing its functionality. In this case it attacks the cells in pancreas and stops the production of insulin in the blood.

Currently there is no preventive measure that can be taken against type 1 diabetes. Most people affected by type 1 diabetes are healthy and of a healthy weight when onset occurs, but they can lose weight quickly and dangerously, if not diagnosed in a relatively short amount of time.

Diet and exercise cannot reverse or prevent type 1 diabetes. However, there are clinical trials ongoing that aim to find methods of preventing or slowing its development.

Treatments of diabetes type 1
Type 1 is treated with insulin replacement therapy — usually by injection or insulin pump, dietary control, typically including carbohydrate tracking, and careful monitoring of blood glucose levels using Glucose meters.

What is Diabetes?

Friday 8 February 2008 @ 12:03 am

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not control the sugar level in the blood properly, because inadequate amounts of insulin are produced by the pancreas. Hereby the urine and blood contains excess of sugar and also causes kidney failure, cardiovascular disease ( the development of coronary artery disease) and blindness - this develops in about 20% of all patients with diabetes. In other words the body can’t convert the sugar in the blood into energy. This condition is known as diabetes mellitus.

There are two types of Diabetes; Type 1 and Type 2.
Type1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is when the body can’t make insulin. The immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that make and release insulin. When these cells die, the blood sugar levels in your body rises. People with type 1 diabetes need insulin shots. Type 1 Diabetes occurs most often in small children.

Type 2 Diabetes
Here the body still makes insulin, but its cells can’t use it. This means that it remains in the bloodstream instead of being burned and transformed into energy. This is called insulin resistance. Over time, high levels of sugar build up in the bloodstream- which will lead to coronary disease. One of the reason people develop type 2 diabetes is because of lack of exercise and being overweight.

Learn the SECRETS of controlling Type 2 Diabetes !!

Saturday 27 October 2007 @ 12:40 am

Why are they secrets and why should I care?

Diabetes is a major cause of disability and of premature death. It is:

* A major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (heart attack, stroke).
* The most common single cause of kidney failure requiring dialysis treatment
* The most common cause of blindness in people less than 60 years of age
* The most common non-traumatic cause of limb amputation

Type 2 or non-insulin-dependent diabetes, previously called adult or maturity-onset diabetes, is due to defective metabolism of glucose by the body’s tissues, with resistance of the tissues to the effects of insulin and a relative deficiency of insulin. The exact cause of type 2 diabetes is unknown, although there is a strong genetic component which is unmasked by lifestyle factors such as eating behavior, obesity and inactivity which precipitate the disease. Type 2
diabetes accounts for 85-90% of all diabetes and the number of cases is increasing rapidly in both developed and developing countries. In Australia, there has been a 300% increase in the number of people with type 2 diabetes in the last 20 years!! (source: the Diabetes Research Consultative Committee by Len Harrison, Kerin O’Dea and Paul Zimmet.)

Diabetic Medication For Type 2 Diabetes
By Sky Joe

If you are having trouble managing your type 2 diabetes with diet and exercise alone, it is likely that your doctor may prescribe an oral diabetic medication to improve your blood glucose control. Some people with type 2 diabetes may also require insulin at some point, but oral medications are almost always given an adequate trial before moving on to insulin. Sometimes, insulin therapy will be combined with an oral medication.

Type 1 Diabetes - How Does it Occur?

Friday 18 May 2007 @ 3:54 pm

Glucose plays a very important role in the functioning of the body. It is the most important carbohydrate, a simple monosaccharide, which helps provide energy to the body. It works with insulin to help build glucose transporters to the body’s cells. This glucose in the cells produces energy required for the functioning of the body. When this process is disturbed and the production of insulin is affected, the condition is called diabetes.

Obesity and Diabetes Have Vaccines

Saturday 9 September 2006 @ 6:04 pm

As much as possible, when a child is still young or in his toddler age, which is eighteen months to four, parents try their best to not spoil them or give in to their demands. These demands are usually sweets and snacks in between meals. That is because if they continue to give in, then when the child goes to school, or worse, attends middle school, he may be overweight.

Diabetes is one of the most dreaded diseases of the current generation. While for some, diabetes may not be as frightening as cancer or brain damage, it can indeed be a grave

condition that could affect one’s life entirely. Such is why those who have diabetes cannot be too careful to adjust their lifestyles to keep the symptoms of the disease manageable.
